The short version

Gambling should be a form of entertainment, not a source of income. If it stops being fun, stop playing. Free, confidential help is available in the UK on 0808 8020 133 (National Gambling Helpline, 24 hours a day).

Simple habits that help

  • Set a budget before every session and treat it as spent money the moment you deposit it.
  • Set a time limit. The most reliable predictor of session losses is session length.
  • Never gamble to make back losses. Chasing is the single most-cited pathway from recreational to harmful gambling.
  • Never gamble while drunk, high or emotionally distressed. Judgement about stakes and stopping is measurably worse in those states.
  • Keep a written log for a month. Track deposits, withdrawals and time spent. Most people are surprised by the totals.

Self-exclusion tools

The primary British scheme is GamStop, covering all UK-licensed online operators. Retail venues use a separate scheme called SENSE. Both are free. Our GamStop explainer covers the details of the online scheme; the safer play guide covers layered blocking.

For family and friends

If someone close to you is gambling in a way that worries you, GamFam offers dedicated family support, and GamCare runs a partner-and-family stream. The National Gambling Helpline accepts calls from concerned family members. Clinicians consistently recommend a direct, non-judgemental conversation over unilateral intervention.

If this is urgent

If you or someone you love is in immediate distress, please contact the Samaritans on 116 123 — free from any UK phone, 24 hours a day. If someone is in immediate physical danger, call 999.
